The Red Road Journey

Teachings of Native American Medicine Men

In the traditional Read Road Way, your search for your inner balance begins with your identity.

What makes up your identity?

By the age of 4 or 5, we all have a mental picture of who we are and who we want to be, called self image. Next we develop a self-concept, putting what we learned into action.

'Who am I going to be?'

In life we must find inner balance through our original identity. If our original self image and self concept didn’t work, we can develop a new identity ; or we may have had a proper identity and then fell away from it, in that case you can reclaim it.

Now we must find the tools to rebuild or create our new identity.

Values

What do we value about ourselves, that is going to get us through rough times?

Values (internal): separate each individual human being. Something you cherich and aspire to. Values meet unmet needs. Values can be anything that you perceive them to be. Values are like goals that we set for ourselves.

By working towards the goal, we create a perspective. Perspective lets you know where you are in relationship to your goals.

Beliefs

You have to have a value before you believe something. If you value your spirituality, you will develop a belief system around your evolvement, etc.

Beliefs are like objectives – you set the goal with a value, now what you believe in will help carry out that goal, what objectives you have, or plan of action. We build a belief system around our values so that we can carry them out. Beliefs create attitudes about our values and objectives.

Subculture (Societal Influence)

Subculture: Culture within a larger one.

Following a subculture is using societal 'tools' to deal externally with an internal problem.

What you do when you follow a subculture : drugs, alcohol, tobacco, violence, sexual promiscuity, irritability, being judgemental, obsessive/compulsive behaviour, stealing, eating disorders etc.

Anything that prevent you from implementing your beliefs and values, thus disrupting inner balance, is following a subculture.

Lifestyle

Our life styles reflect our beliefs and values going all the way back to creation, and who we were meant to be. Lifestyle is implementing your objectives to achieve your goals, which creates your character.

If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.
